European Clothing in the Lifetime of George Frideric Handel

The lecture will be given by Ing. Petr Tylínek, fashion designer, theorist and teacher.

Thomas Hudson (1701-1779): George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Oil painting on canvas, 1748-1749. 121.0 × 100.5 cm. Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky, Germany.

The aim of the Workshop will be to acquaint the participants with the basic features of clothing culture in particular parts of Europe approximately from the late 17th to the mid-18th centuries. By means of period pictorial examples comprising authentic portraits of Handel, the lecturer will make an attempt at reconstructing the composer's wardrobe inclusive of accessories: wigs, shoes, underwear. The utilized materials as well as the treatment of cuts, especially in regard to shaping an emphasized belly, may prove to be revealing.
